Antique Belgian Cutwork Bobbin Lace Doily with Four Swans, Flanders
Beautiful antique Belgian bobbin lace doily with an openwork pattern, handmade.
This piece, crafted with handmade bobbin lace, features alternating motifs of four swans and water plants, creating a poetic, lyrical, and evocative work.
Likely made in the Flanders region of Belgium, using dozens, even hundreds, of bobbins. The lace edging showcases the Flanders technique, dating back about a century.
The design incorporates crossed mesh/tulle. Swans and floral motifs are highlighted with slightly thicker outline threads and openwork techniques, while water plants, water flowers, floating islands, and vase motifs appear to gently drift on the water's surface.
Feathers and petals are rendered with a balance of tightness and looseness through intricate needlework, making the swans resting on the lake seem as if they could swim right before your eyes.
The edge features a small, delicate picot lace.
The color is a clean, bright ecru, a refreshing off-white.
The texture is a blend of smoothness, softness, and a gentle, dry feel. The center fabric appears to be made of fine, high-quality cotton.
The crisp fabric is likely a sheer lawn woven from very fine linen or high-quality cotton, and the bobbin threads are imagined to be natural linen or a linen-cotton blend.
