Artist-made Madara Karatsu Sugar Pot with Hand-carved Wooden Spoon, Lidded Container, Vintage
This item has been sold.
This is a vintage sugar pot.
When I was young, I encountered this vessel at a coffee shop in Karatsu and was captivated by its functional beauty, which led me to desperately want it.
So, through an introduction, I visited the kiln and requested the creation of the same item (Madara Karatsu), which is this one.
There is a potter's mark on the bottom of the vessel, but I have forgotten the artist's name due to its age.
This is Madara Karatsu. Madara Karatsu is characterized by its milky white straw ash glaze and the blue and black spots formed by the iron in the clay and ash from the kiln. Its charm lies in its simple yet powerful earthy texture and the beautiful variations in the glaze (kiln changes), showing diverse expressions in white, blue, yellow, and pink depending on the firing temperature. As shown in photo 11, even within Madara Karatsu, the scenery varies.
Personally, I love the generous curve of the body, which evokes a sense of depth and gentleness.
The crisp, straight handles have a certain sense of purity. Your index fingers can fit into both handles, providing stability when carrying.
This is an important feature for a sugar pot that will be moved around the table.
The wooden sugar spoon is also hand-carved by the same artist, and its gentle curve fits perfectly with both the vessel and your hand.
It comes in two colors. I believe they are zelkova or oak, but I'm not sure. I plan to include the lighter one (white), but I can accommodate your preference if you have one.
If you do not want the spoon, the price will be reduced by 2500 yen.
Height with lid approximately 13cm
Circumference approximately 29cm
Outer diameter of the rim approximately 8cm, inner diameter approximately 6cm
Spoon length approximately 14cm
❋This is a 50-year-old vintage item.
There are minor chips (photo 17).
