Born in Hong Kong, the youngest of 10 siblings, his father was a tailor for actor William Holden.
After studying at the University of Leeds in the UK, he returned to Hong Kong and won second place in the ATV Asian Music Contest in 1976. This led to his success on stage, TV, and in youth films. He broke through with a significant role in John Woo's A Better Tomorrow (86).
He went on to appear in acclaimed films by Hong Kong cinema masters such as Tsui Hark's A Chinese Ghost Story (87), Chen Kaige's Palme d'Or winner at the Cannes Film Festival, Farewell My Concubine (93), and Wong Kar-wai's Happy Together (97). He moved to Canada in '92 but returned shortly after, purchasing real estate and opening a cafe, signaling his intention to remain in Hong Kong after its handover in '97.
Died April 1, 2003 (aged 46)
