Antique American Crazy Quilt from the 1890’s
The lady this belonged to is in her 90’s and it was stored in a cedar chest. It had been a family piece that had been passed down to her. 40” x 30 1/2” My opinion is this quilt is in good condition, considering its age Please see photos for condition - There are some Fabric Blemishes Such as Pulls and or Minor Tears or Fabric that has been worn through. This style of quilt making was popular during the Victorian era (late 1800s) and is characterized by its haphazard appearance using irregularly shaped fabric scraps. Materials: Typically made from a mix of luxurious fabrics such as cotton, silk, and velvet. Design: Features a spontaneous patchwork of irregular pieces, often heavily embellished with elaborate embroidery stitches along the seams. Purpose: These quilts were primarily decorative items and a way for makers to showcase their needlework skills, rather than functional bedding.
